Opportunity is everywhere. The key is to develop the vision to see it. Lewis Hamilton‘s former go-to man during the race weekend has revealed a Golden opportunity missed by him and Mercedes. The former confidant talks about why Mercedes let the opportunity slip out of his hand and how another team pounced on it.
Logan Sargeant has overcome all the speculations made about his move to F1 being a naive one. The Florida-born driver only had one season in the F2 championship and his move to Williams was labeled as premature. The American finished P12 and P16 in the opening two races of the season. He looks faster than his experienced teammate Alex Albon on a one-lap pace and is only marginally slower in the race trim. Logan also would’ve got into the Q2 at the Saudi Arabian GP had it not been for him overstepping the track limit.
Prior to Williams, Sargeant trailed at Mercedes for a simulator evaluation. James Vowles, a then Mercedes man and now the Williams TP revealed that he was interested in Sargeant’s performance. However, Mercedes had a great bunch of drivers at that time, and that is why Logan didn’t go any further. Vowles has now expressed how he was wrong in not signing him back in the day and how Williams was right.

According to the-race.com, James Vowles said “He came to Mercedes as a sim evaluation [driver] and I was interested in looking at him. At the time in Mercedes, we had a good suite of drivers. So that was where my relationship with him ended.” He then added, “But I have to say, he’s now been in the car, I now have the ability to look at his data, and he is here on merit. So, it just shows you that in my previous life, I was wrong and Williams were right.”

Logan Sargeant has proved his outright pace in the initial races of 2023. His pace combined with the fact that he’s only 22 years old, means he still has a long way to go and will only get better from here. Vowles mentioned how Logan is not as experienced as Albon, but has the fire inside him to extract every last bit of performance from the car.
According to the-race.com, James Vowles said, “He hasn’t got the experience that Alex brings to the team. But he has this young, fiery passion that comes with things. He wants every millisecond you can get out the car.”
