Lewis Hamilton has slowly been creeping into the ‘legend’ category alongside the likes of Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. However, despite the incredible achievements over his mountainous career, there is one debate that is still revolving around the seven-time world champion.
Who should be credited for the whopping seven world championship titles? Lewis? Or the dominant Mercedes car?
Well, former F1 driver, Romain Grosjean, had the answer to this controversial question. He felt that the powerful Mercedes car played the biggest role in Lewis’s astonishing F1 career.

Grosjean’s view on Lewis Hamilton
According to PlanetF1, the Frenchman opened up about Lewis’s successful career. He opined that the Knight wouldn’t have been as successful had he driven for a team like Haas.
“Hamilton would never have been able to fight for points in last year’s Haas car either,” he said. “A lot depends on the car you drive. That makes it difficult to compare drivers with each other.”
Lewis Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013, a team that were preparing themselves for the forthcoming hybrid era. Eventually, as F1 welcomed the much-awaited hybrid era, the Silver Arrows looked like an entirely different team.
A team that were struggling until that moment made a giant leap onto the top of the table. Subsequently, Lewis managed to find the new Mercedes pace comfortable, as he, from there on, managed to pull off an incredible seven-year phase with them.
The car ultimately makes the difference: Grosjean
The former Haas driver considered Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Williams’ George Russell as the primary examples to strengthen his claims on Lewis.
Leclerc looked quite strong, and his 2019 season proved the fact that the Monegasque could be contending for titles soon. However, the 2020 season pulled Leclerc down from what could have been a brilliant second consecutive season for him.
“Leclerc, for example, in my opinion, also drove a good 2020 season, but because his car was not good enough, it didn’t quite come out,” Grosjean said.
Similarly, Russell made his debut outing with Mercedes over the Sakhir Grand Prix last season. Despite jumping into the car for the first time just days away from the race, he still managed to lead the pack through most parts of the race.

Unfortunately, Mercedes’ untimely mistake led to Russell giving up his win. Grosjean pointed that weekend as a strong example that a car plays a vital role in a driver’s success.
“Russell is perhaps the clearest example that proves that the car ultimately makes the difference,” he said.
