Heavy is the head that wears the crown. And the champion Lewis Hamilton wears it both on and off track. On one hand, he has broken every record in the book, on the other he knows that the success he has mustered should be used for the greater good. The 7x champion has often been seen raising his voice using the major platform he has. Perhaps that is the reason why people from his homeland are urging him to take up the human rights cause against the host of the season opener Grand Prix, Bahrain. However, there is just one obstacle, the FIA.

European Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (ECDHR) addressed a letter to Hamilton and other drivers. The letter asked the drivers’ support to raise awareness against the concerning human rights violations in the first GP’s host country. The said letter asked the men at the apex of motor sporting to lead by example and that there is a ‘need for collective support’.

At a news conference organized by the London-based Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD), British parliamentarian, as quoted by Aljazeera Paul Scriven, said, “There are two roads that F1 can now take. One is a road which is a moral vacuum where the leaders and the administrators seem to be going.”

He further added, “There is another road that some drivers seem to be taking … who understand they can use their platform and their sport not just for sport’s sake but for good and for change and that they cannot ignore the human rights abuses in the country that they are driving in.”

As reported by SoyMotor, Lord Scriven believes that the said ban is aimed at certain drivers.
