In the past decade, we have not come across a rivalry as intense as the one between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. We witnessed the peak of it in 2021 and often the emotions spilled over beyond the track as well. However, the most awkward scenario for the cut-throat rivals was sharing the podium after almost every race. So imagine our surprise watching Hamilton and Verstappen hilariously plot against George Russell.
Mercedes‘ major upgrade package gave them the first double podium of the season. This effectively gave the Mercedes men an opportunity to share the podium with the 2023 season’s most consistent podium finisher, Max Verstappen. During this celebration, as seen on Twitter, the Dutchman and Hamilton were surprisingly heard plotting against Russell.
Perhaps it is because of the non-existent title fight, a feeling Hamilton has felt in the past, but there seem to be no lingering ill feelings between the two. This brought out a never seen side of the two. The two world champions, during the Spanish GP podium celebrations, targeted the young Brit.

Verstappen was even heard saying, “I sprayed him so hard, sorry!” To which Hamilton couldn’t help but giggle.
The wholesome scenario was heartwarming, to say the least. These rare scenarios between two equally good and mutually respectful drivers are sights that warm our hearts. In fact, the two keep showcasing their respect for each other time and again, especially after the rivalry has dialed down.

Losing out on the 2021 championship was a hard pill to swallow for Hamilton. The Brit went into isolation and even considered retiring, according to some sources. However, the Brit has moved past the heartbreak and even communicates his appreciation for the incredible job Red Bull has done in the current season whenever asked to.
“It can take a long time to overtake a superior car. There are cars that lose strength as the season progresses, but I expect the opposite with Red Bull. Red Bull is a great team and they will continue to improve their car,” he confessed. “Hopefully we will be able to close the gap in the rest of the season.”
