Given how competition has grown in F1 in the last few years, drivers cannot afford to display any vulnerabilities. That does not include just the weaknesses in their armor on the track, but off it as well. Lewis Hamilton, being a seasoned campaigner, has been around long enough to understand the iteration the sport is going through. That being said, he has a vulnerable side to him as well. However, he has learned to deal with it. It has not come easy, though.

Hamilton is one of those very few F1 drivers who weren’t born with a silver spoon in their mouth. His very first kart was an old one which had to be repaired and refurbished to be made functional. However, once he took it on a track, it instantly took him by surprise. That kart was the beginning of many life lessons he would learn on the tarmac. When it comes to life lessons off the tarmac, they too came through adrenaline-pumping thrilling activities.

In the latest episode of The Fast And The Curious podcast, Hamilton revealed, “Many a time I’ve gone up on the plane and I’ve been so nervous like people normally are and I love fighting that. Like – no that’s not real even if I’m scared of doing something… I could be terrified of a high jump but I’m like I’m gonna do it. Mind over matter. I don’t like fear ever trying to get in the way of me doing things.”

Skydiving has become one of the favorite pastimes of the 7x world champion. And if you ask him, it is more than just a pastime. To call it a necessity now won’t really be a case of exaggeration.

Lewis Hamilton admitted to being an adrenaline junkie

The summer break and the off-season are times of the year when drivers get to take a breather. Lewis is no exception, but even during those times, he likes to keep the adrenaline flowing. The need for that, he attributes to the necessity to fill the void between the thrill of F1 races.

In a 2021 interview for Showtime, he said, “I love surfing. I sky dive, love skydiving.”

When the shocked hosts asked him if he was an adrenaline junkie, Lewis answered, “Yeah, you basically have to substitute it. Because the races. You’re on this massive high and when you come after the race, the next couple of days, you’re just crashing down. Then you hit a low. Then you have to pick yourself back up. You’re back into training. So I usually fill it in with things, fun activities in between training.”

Formula 1 is certainly not a sport for the ordinary. But then again, Sir Lewis Hamilton is no ordinary man. His fans will certainly hope that he bounces back from the gruesome season he had last year.
