There was a lot of anticipation going into the 2022 season regarding the pairing of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Every F1 fan wanted to see how the young British would fare against the 7-time world champion. But to everyone’s surprise, at times he has even outshone his experienced teammate.

In the first half of the season, the former Williams driver was the more consistent driver. But in the past three races, Hamilton has started to regain his form. Yet the F1 GOAT was complimentary of Russell as he sees him leading the German team in the future.
“I definitely see that he’s got so much potential in him [to be a world champion] and he’s in the right place for it as well. I really think that… whether or not I’m here, he has all the qualities to help take this team forward in the future and lead them to success, so I think it’s been the right choice for the team, I hope I can be a little bit of a part of helping him progress,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton also revealed how Russell has settled in with the team since the start of the season.

The experienced driver mentioned that his young teammate has had a positive impact on the team since his arrival. He also mentioned his experience of working alongside him as a teammate.
“I won’t say it’s been tough [being Russell’s teammate]; it’s been pleasant, we’ve worked together incredibly well. George has been super positive… had a positive impact on the work environment. It’s generally been a real pleasure to work with him and it’s been great to see his success,” said the 7-time world champion.

It is nice to see that Hamilton is so supportive of his young teammate. He predicts Russell would be the perfect leader of the team in the coming years. Hopefully, Russell can enjoy the same success in the future as Hamilton has had with Mercedes.
