Does Lewis Hamilton's success owe more to talent or the wisdom passed down from his father?

Even at 39, Lewis Hamilton sticks to his father’s wise words. The Briton’s emotional exchange with Anthony Hamilton in Silverstone shows how close they are to each other. While current World Champion Max Verstappen‘s father Jos was a former F1 racer, Lewis’ father comes from a humble background. He had to work multiple jobs to fund Hamilton’s karting career during his early days in motorsports. Recently, the Stevenage native got candid about how his father’s words got him through a tough phase in his life when he struggled to connect with people around him.

As a young Black racer taking part in motorsports, Lewis Hamilton has often had to deal with discrimination. The Briton remains the only racer of his ethnicity to have made it into Formula 1. And those people with conventional mindsets who did not want to see the rise of Hamilton discouraged him. But that never stopped him from disregarding his critics and getting to the topmost forum in motorsports. As an F1 racer, Hamilton has enjoyed enormous success with seven World Championship titles. But to reach here, he has had to develop a tough skin against cruel comments.

Speaking on how he always stays true to his father’s sayings, Lewis Hamilton said to UBS, “The early part of life…I think that was definitely the toughest. You’re thrown into an environment where people aren’t supportive. They would never really understand what we were working towards.” While describing the ugly conditions that Hamilton had to face, he revealed how Anthony’s words pulled him through all of it.

Hamilton continued, “My dad, particularly, was that strength of someone telling you, ‘You can’. I just always remember my dad saying like don’t give up, never give up. So, even when I’m racing today, I always just have that message right at the back, and that’s what’s kind of propelling me forward.” In recent times, the Mercedes racer has scored his 104th Grand Prix win after 945 days since his last race victory.

Before his win in Silverstone last weekend, Lewis Hamilton was the subject of much speculations in F1 town. Now, he has slammed the door on his critics’ faces with a roaring victory at the British GP. But what did Anthony have to say about Lewis’ win in Silverstone?

He might not belong to a racing background, but Anthony Hamilton has visited several races with his son. In fact, between his F1 debut in 2007 and 2010, the Briton served as Hamilton’s manager. So, he analyzed how the race went for the #7 driver, explaining, “There was absolutely no way, with that current tire and the tires that he [Lewis Hamilton] had underneath him, that he was going to allow that win to slip for the British public. And that’s what drove him on.”

Coming to the challenge that lies ahead of Hamilton now, he has only a 1-point gap to teammate George Russell on the Championship standings. As he has rediscovered the speed in his Mercedes W15, Lewis needs to climb up the rankings so that he can get into the top 5 soon. Do you think the British GP win was a one-time incident for Lewis, or will he repeat the feat once again at one of the upcoming Grand Prix?
