Lewis Hamilton is having a poor year. The seven-time world champion hasn’t won a race in the 2022 season. Even the Spanish Grand Prix was looking like a disaster for the Brit as he collided with the Haas driver, Kevin Magnussen, and had to change his tires after the very first lap. However, the resilient world champion managed to finish the race in P5.
Lewis Hamilton on his Spanish GP recovery drive
Hamilton began the race at P6 but dropped to the bottom of the grid. The English driver gave up on the hopes of finishing top 10. Hamilton even asked his team to retire from the race so they could save his car’s engine. But the Brackley base didn’t go with Hamilton’s suggestion and asked him to continue the race as, according to them, P8 was very much on the table.
Eventually, Hamilton somehow managed to finish P5 and also became the Driver of the Day. After the race, Hamilton shared his thoughts on the recovery run, “Yeah, honestly, I’m so grateful just to get some points. It’s been quite a there’s been some bad luck this year, and again that today really, I mean, it’s not bad luck. I mean, it is on my side a little bit unlucky.”

“But I don’t really know what he was up to. But yeah, there was a point where I was in no man’s land. I didn’t think it was possible to even catch the guys and even get back into the race. I was 30 seconds adrift but somehow managed to get a lot further than they thought. So I like that we just didn’t give up.”
Hamilton wants Mercedes to continue the development
The 2022 Mercedes challenger has been struggling with significant porpoising. And the Silver Arrows duo kept complaining about the drivability of the W13. However, Mercedes’ upgrades for the Spanish GP gave a massive boost in performance to the German F1 team.

The upgraded W13 helped George Russell finish P3 on the podium and Hamilton P5 after his disappointing position drop. Hamilton is impressed by the new developments and wants his team to continue developing the car.
“Yeah, definitely we need to keep pushing for some improvements, but the car was a lot better and particularly in the race was a lot better today.” Hamilton said, “So, really interesting pace-wise. I mean, I hope that this continues in these next races.”
