Formula 1 witnessed one of its greatest seasons in 2021; Netflix gave us the chance to relive it. The highs and lows of the season, from Ocon’s victory in Hungary to Norris’s heartache in Sochi- all lay bare to the cameras. This also includes the highs of Red Bull’s celebrations and Mercedes’ heartbreak in Abu Dhabi. However, Toto Wolff had made one thing very clear: what Lewis Hamilton and the Silver Arrows lost at the Yas Marina Circuit, is something they want to be paid back in 2022.

After 9 episodes of what only feels like a blink compared to the season gone by, once again, DTS took us back to Abu Dhabi. Yet again, as the sun set on the desert, the controversial season finale and its immediate reactions were out for the world to see. Now, the 2022 season dawns on the horizon. And before F1 awakens to its new era, Toto Wolff has something to say.

Wolff began, “Lewis has done everything that was necessary to win the championship. It was taken away from him, and there’s nothing better that they could have done to motivate us.”

Thus, the ultimate question: “will Red Bull have a target on their backs this year?”

Wolff then took the honor of wrapping up season 4 of Drive to Survive with a pretty bow: “Everybody has a target on their backs next year.”

Rehashing the Lewis Hamilton-Max Verstappen drama of 2021

Revisiting the season through Netflix’s lens helped remind F1 what an intense championship battle was fought. Right from their first outing in Bahrain, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen had given it everything. The first episode of the series holds a mirror to the last episode, almost connecting the first race of the season to the last.

What started with Verstappen having to give up his position in Bahrain, unfurled numerous battles on the track, and more wars off it. While the fireworks were for Hamilton in Bahrain, Red Bull sat back angrily; only getting more determined for the season ahead of them.

Ultimately, the roles were reversed. However, the injustice was too great for Mercedes at the finale. Although Wolff has shot his warning, it almost goes without saying that Hamilton will be back for his eighth title. In the show, Hamilton explained, “All of us drivers, we grew up with dreams of winning a world championship. Even after winning seven, I still have that desire to win.”

Nonetheless, the man who impeded him carries the same tenacity. While Mercedes and Hamilton set their eyes on reclaiming their throne, Red Bull and Verstappen may have set the cornerstone for their empire. With the 2022 season a mere week away, let the games begin!
