Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have been able to achieve great feats since the start of their partnership in 2013. Since then, the Briton has been able to take 103 wins, 183 podiums, and seven driver’s championships. And while this looks like a well-calculated move now, when the announcement was done in 2012; everyone in Formula 1 was shocked.

Many thought it was a grave mistake to leave a championship-winning team at McLaren. But ever since Lewis eventually won the title in 2014, the comments made back then have seemed very interesting. Hamilton’s appearance on Top Gear is one of those examples where the host Jeremy Clarkson is critical of the Briton’s move to Mercedes.

When Jeremy Clarkson likened the move from McLaren to Mercedes to moving from Manchester United to West Ham, the audience, along with Lewis Hamilton went into laughter.”It’s a big change for me obviously,” Lewis began saying.

“But I am really really excited about it. Everyone is criticizing it and everyone has their own opinions but for me, I have been with McLaren since I was 13, it was a long long period there and I wanted a change. I am a risk-taker.”

But then the host quickly pointed out that Mercedes had been struggling in the last few years and their only championship was before the German manufacturer bought out Brawn GP. Lewis, however, was quick to refute that. His argument was that in 2009, McLaren had underestimated the complexity of the rule change. Since then, the Woking-outfit was on the back foot and unable to go back to its glory days.

“It was so many good things about the opportunity to go somewhere, where they are struggling and hopefully be a part of something’s that gonna become great.”
