Silver Arrows seemed to struggle throughout the year with their Lacklustre performance. But now the team has got its maiden victory at the Interlagos Circuit. George Russell was quick as a flash and got his first victory, with Hamilton finishing behind him.
This victory prevented the Silver Arrows from ending their season without a win since 2011. The Brackley-based team has improved their W-13, which was plagued by several issues, and showed lightning speed on the Sao Paulo track. As proof, we can see how Carlos Sainz, who had fresher tires, was unable to compete with the Silver Arrows.
When asked if this shows a positive comeback, Lewis Hamilton said, “Definitely is a great, great sign. For a long, long period of time, we can really, truly understand what the problem was or how to fix it. It was difficult because we kept trying and trying and trying and every time something new came, we still had the problems we had. So this is really, really huge.
He further added, “We know where our North Star is, we know where we need to put all our efforts into this winter.”
To keep their hopes alive, Mercedes has to at least finish both remaining races on 1-2 but George Russell was surprised after both he and Hamilton were allowed to race instead of just quietly bringing the car home.
George Russell was surprised after the team allowed both him and Lewis Hamilton to race
After winning the sprint race, Russell lined up at P1 for the main race at the Brazilian circuit. To keep their hopes alive to bag the second spot in World Constructor Championship, both the drivers have to end at least on 1-2 in both the remaining races.
At last, the duo was successful in securing the discussed positions, the stage was set for the maiden victory for Russell, thanks to the collision of Hamilton with Max Verstappen, which led the seven times champion trail behind the young Briton.

During the last laps, when Russell had a decent lead from teammate, he asked his race engineer, “So what are we doing, are we racing or are we protecting the one-two?” The reply came, “No, you are allowed to race.” When asked in the post-race press conference if he was shocked after Mercedes’s decision.
Russell said, “Yes, and No because we’ve always said that we’re free to race. Toto and the team have put a lot of faith and trust in Lewis and I.” He further added knowing the important positions they had, “I knew how important that one-two was for the team so if we weren’t racing, it was kind of like, ‘bring the car home’. If we were racing, it was a qualy lap every single lap and you’re risking every corner because the laps just had to be perfect.”
