Mercedes just can’t seem to get it right. Ever since Abu Dhabi last year, Lewis Hamilton has been on the wrong side of Safety and Virtual Safety Cars. At the Dutch Grand Prix, it finally felt like Hamilton’s first win of the season was just around the corner. However, after a late VSC and eventually a full Safety Car, Hamilton succumbed to Red Bull’s strategy and had to concede the win to Verstappen.

After the race, Hamilton came onto the radio and ranted away. “That was the biggest f*** up.”, he exclaimed on the radio. He then went on to lay the entire blame of how things panned out onto his team. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has now opened up about his feelings about the whole expletive-ridden radio rant.

He explained, “You are emotional, I am also during races, and when you’re a driver in the car, it just comes out of you. You just can’t help it.”. Wolff then went on to lament his plight as a Team Principal, “We’re the garbage can, the vomit bag on the plane, and we take it all because we know it’s needed. That’s how it’s always been in a relationship between a frustrated pilot and the pit wall.” (translated by Google Translate).

This isn’t the only time when Hamilton has lost his cool in the heat of the battle. Toto Wolff has had to manage his Championship-winning driver on multiple occasions. Sometimes however, it would seem that Hamilton may have anger issues.

Lewis Hamilton is that kind of driver who wears his heart on his sleeve. Malaysia 2015 is a prime example of this. Hamilton felt betrayed and perplexed at the strategy the team had chosen for him. He went all into his team. And he held no prisoners.

He came onto the radio and said, “This is the wrong tyre man.”. The race went on and Hamilton’s frustrations grew. When his team updated him on the situation with regards to the car ahead, Hamilton snapped at his team, “Don’t talk to me in a corner! I almost went off.” Credit where credit is deserved, he cooled down and apologized later.
