Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have been the two dominant forces in F1 in the last decade or so. With Max Verstappen leading the championship with 120+ points midway into the season, it can very well be another Super Max year. Amid the threat of Verstappen winning all the remaining races, the real essence of F1 is highlighted for Verstappen by Hamilton, who issues him an “empty” warning. What did the Briton say?

Lewis Hamilton, who was the predecessor of Verstappen’s F1 dominance issued a warning to the Dutchman and highlighted the essence of F1. The Briton explained how he also loved winning everything back in the day, but eventually, he wanted to have competition for the winning spot otherwise the win felt “empty”. He further explained how close racing is and what the drivers and fans live for.

According to @LH44updates’ Tweet, Lewis Hamilton said “Eventually, you want to have more competition because it sometimes feels empty when you’re so far out ahead, which is always the goal. But when you’ve had the races where you’ve come from a bit further back or fighting to keep 1st or 2nd place, that’s what we live for.”

While Red Bull has built the fastest car, F1 isn’t only about it. The essence of the sport is racing hard. The minute you take that away from the sport, you lose half the appeal. Even Hamilton advised that he likes close racing.

Hamilton recently made statements suggesting how FIA set a date when the teams can start the development of next year’s car. All of this is just to promote closer racing and stop the lead team from dominating for multiple years. Whilst Hamilton had multiple years of dominance with Mercedes, he suggests that he likes the close racing this year a lot more. However, the goal is to reach the top again.

According to RTBF.be, Lewis Hamilton said “I would say that I enjoy racing a lot more now than I did then, because I race in a peloton. But of course, the goal is to get where he is. I think for our sport the goal is to be closer.” [Translated Via Google]
