Lewis Hamilton is a seven-time world champion. And he is one of the two people in the world who can say that about themselves. The Mercedes man narrowly missed out on his eighth, which would have made him the undisputed GOAT in Formula 1. However, Lewis is not going anywhere. And the championship is still up for grabs.

Lewis Hamilton, the greatest of all time?

According to former Formula 1 driver turned race steward Derek Warwick, there is none better than Lewis. And he’s not only talking about the current grid. Warwick claims Lewis’s greatness stands the test of time. And calls him the “greatest champion of all time” while comparing the Mercedes man to all legends of the sport.

Speaking with Express.co.uk, Warwick said, “He is a great champion. I don’t think you’re going to get many arguments that would say he’s not the greatest champion of all time. And I’m putting him up against Senna and Prost, Fangio and Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart, all those guys.”

But we get where Warwick’s coming from. Lewis has shattered almost all records in the wake of his seven world championship titles. Derek even ridiculed the criticism, suggesting Lewis won all the championship titles only because of a fast car.

Warwick explained how all previous world champions achieved the feat in the best cars. And it’s difficult, borderline impossible to do so without one.

Warwick defends Lewis and Mercedes

So far, the Silver Arrows have suffered from porpoising issues across all three race weekends, and are only the third-fastest car on the grid. Moreover, to add insult to injury, Lewis is 43 points behind the table leader, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari.

Warwick defended them by adding, “It seems the concept of the Mercedes exaggerates the porpoising but the one thing you have to say with Toto Wolff, Ron Meadows and people like that, they will turn the corner. That car will be competitive, it will be winning and Lewis will be winning in it, as will George Russell.”

We know Lewis possesses the quality. It might only be a matter of time before we start seeing him back on podiums. It will be interesting to see how far Mercedes has progressed with the W13 in the coming race at Imola.
