There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Lewis Hamilton is one of the greatest drivers the sport has ever produced. His achievements and statistics speak for themselves. However, even for the best of the best, there comes a time when they have to humbly step away from their post. It seems that the time is now for the Brit as even his much older rival Fernando Alonso exposed him during the Canadian GP. The Spaniard not only exposed his excuse but also showcased how he is closer to Max Verstappen instead of Hamilton.
Staying true to this word of giving Alonso hell, Hamilton passed him at the start of the race with a better start. However, the Spaniard kept the pressure on and reclaimed his position later in the race. According to Hamilton, it was the superior pace of the Aston Martin car. However, the journalists at F1 Maximaal think otherwise and also believe the Spaniard is the closest rival to Verstappen.
“After a weaker weekend in Spain, [Fernando] Alonso was back to his old level in Canada,” wrote editor-in-chief Mark Hanselman. ” [Lewis] Hamilton may say he didn’t fight the Spaniard because the Aston Martin was much too fast for his Mercedes, but I think Alonso just outbraked his old rival very nicely.

He added, “Alonso is the only one who has any right to complain about Red Bull Racing’s dominance because he is the only one who can come close to [Max] Verstappen’s level.
There might be some truth in Hanselman’s comments as this isn’t the first time Alonso has exposed Hamilton in a race this season.

DAZN reporter and former racer Roldán Rodríguez after the season opener in Bahrain sat down to discuss a particular scenario. A scenario which saw Alonso overtake Hamilton to clinch his first podium of the season. Unsurprisingly, Rodríguez’s thoughts coincided with Hanselman’s.
“Fernando chose the perfect one and the one that no other driver can think of, not even in F1, F2. It was very special, because the overtaking starts at turns five and six, in the rapids going downhill. If taking a normal driver to the orchard is very complicated, taking a whole Lewis Hamilton… It was brutal how he did it,” praised the former driver.
