Lewis Hamilton missed the Sakhir Grand Prix last weekend because of COVID-19. Mercedes made an official announcement earlier last week that the Briton tested positive for the fatal virus. The FIA moved to isolate Lewis Hamilton and followed the necessary protocols thereafter.

Mercedes replaced Lewis Hamilton with George Russell after having struck a deal with Williams to loan Hamilton’s compatriot for the weekend.

George Russell put up a fantastic outing right from the get-go. He qualified at P2 just a couple of milliseconds behind his teammate.

Russell took the lead out of Turn 1 of the starting lap. He seemed set to win his first Formula 1 race driving for Mercedes. However, Mercedes’ pit-stop blunder and an unfortunate puncture blew the young Englishman’s dreams right up.

Meanwhile, Hamilton recently posted a message on Twitter for everyone. He revealed that he is working towards getting back in the car for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“Just been focusing on recovering and trying to get back in shape so I can get back in the car and race the final race in Abu Dhabi,” he said. “I woke up today feeling great and got my first workout in,” he further added.

Lewis Hamilton thanks everyone for their wishes

In the video, he also shared that he is doing better and working towards getting fit for the last race of the weekend. He said, “I hope that I can get back in the car soon and sending you guys love!”

George Russell was the driver of the day last weekend. However, he lost a chance to record his first Formula 1 win. It remains to be seen whether Hamilton recovers in time or if Russell gets another chance at the podium next weekend.
