Lewis Hamilton is not the better of the two Mercedes drivers and might just be past his prime. That’s what you would hear in multiple media outlets after his poor start to the current F1 season. But the mastermind behind Michael Schumacher’s world championships and current F1 managing director of F1, Ross Brawn, thinks otherwise.

Hamilton outpacing his teammate, George Russell, on only one occasion so far may be a concern for many. But Brawn believes his approach to finding a solution for the struggling Mercedes W13 only cements his “All-time great” status.

“These first few races he’s been looking for the solutions and, in doing so, he’s been ping-ponging around with different set-ups on the car, trying to reach the solutions. He’s probably sacrificing the races in a way to try to get the information and data that the team can use to solve the problem,” said Brawn, explaining Hamilton’s performances.

“That’s the feedback I get from the team while George is following a more conventional path… and Lewis is trying to set out to solve the problem. That’s why I think people saying George has outqualified and outraced him in the last few races can’t see the bigger picture,” added Brawn on the different approaches of Lewis and George toward the Mercedes conundrum.

But there are some changes made in Russell’s car that were excluded from Lewis’s W13. “Our cars were a little bit different,” said Hamilton about the difference in both the car. And ultimately, the experiment on Russell’s W13 seemed to be the way to go as he out-qualified Hamilton, again!
