McLaren‘s Zak Brown visited the Red Bull factory on a recce to look for ‘options’. And the newest Mercedes customer to claim that the engine deal beyond 2025 isn’t set in stone is the team’s closest ally, Williams. The German team recently lost their chief strategist to the team, often known as their ‘B-Team’. Now they also face the risk of losing the entire team as their customer. The team’s new TP, James Vowles, has given an interesting analogy highlighting the customer is king. Soon, there might come a situation where he executes the breakup in a “Hello Toto, it’s James” manner.
Of 10 teams that exist on the grid, 4 run on Mercedes power trains. While that is not an overstep for a team that won eight titles in a row, we can witness a new trend around the paddock ever since it has been made clear that the Silver Arrows are not at the top of their game anymore. What began with McLaren wanting to shift bases has probably spilled over to their ‘sister’ team. This puts Lewis Hamilton‘s team in an unprecedented situation where there is a lack of trust.
As quoted by motorsport-total, Vowels said, “We’re still in the process of making sure we understand all the options that are available to the team. There are a few lines in the rules that state that theoretically, from 2025 onwards, this is the number of teams a power unit manufacturer can supply. The same rules, by the way, should have limited [Mercedes] to fewer PU deliveries this year than they currently do have. I think that’s an ongoing discussion. But no, we’re not tied to Mercedes. And we’re still checking that out. But like all other teams, we have to make a decision pretty soon. I think the end of the year would be too late. So a bit earlier.”

The former Silver Arrows chief strategist said, “As you can imagine, it would be stupid to just do what I feel comfortable with and what I know. If you want to paint your house, you get three quotes and I would recommend you do the same. And it’s the same here. I want to make sure I understand what’s available to us.”
While the Brackley outfit dominated the sports for almost a decade, many hailed the man at the helm of it as the most successful team principal of all time. However, with the recent performance showcased by his team, doubts are seeping in.

You become a hero when you deliver and are more easily shunned when you don’t. Such is the brutal nature of the sport. Fans hailed Toto Wolff, who is the CEO and TP of the 8x champion team, as the greatest. But the side-pod design resulted in zero wins for the champion Lewis Hamilton, who recently called his team out. However, the Wolff is determined that they’ll find their way back to the top.
In a recent interview with Speed Week, Toto said, “We’ve been through all the ups and downs and there’s not a millimetre of doubt. There’s so much support from them to get us back on track. We couldn’t ask for better support. I really enjoy being the team leader of this team. I think I can make my contribution.”
