Hamilton's playful jab at Leclerc—Is this the kind of rivalry F1 needs more of?

The photographer inside Lewis Hamilton has found a new muse in Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque who got pole position at yesterday’s Qualifying, will pair up with Hamilton at Ferrari next season. After the Quali, when Leclerc was busy talking to the press, Lewis appeared in the background. And in his hands was a phone with which the 7-time World Champion was taking photographs.

When the video of the soon-to-be Scuderia teammates made it to social media, fans took a cheeky swipe at Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes racer has never expressed how excited he might be to move to Ferrari in 2025. But since the video of Hamilton taking pictures of Charles Leclerc went viral, some X users now believe it indicates how stoked the 104 Grand Prix winner is for a trip to Maranello.

Lewis Hamilton took up Ferrari‘s multi-year contract that came with a whopping $100 million salary. The announcement came as a surprise for fans all over the world in February 2024. Commenting on it, the Briton had said, “I now have the chance to fulfill another childhood dream. Driving in Ferrari red.” However, he never said he could not wait to switch teams, especially now that Mercedes has shown off superior speed with their upgraded W15s.

But Lewis Hamilton‘s recent post-Belgian GP Quali video looks like he was taking shots of his future teammate Charles Leclerc. “Lewis??? What were you taking a photo of there?” A fan wrote on X, trying to pull Hamilton’s leg. Perhaps, the X users thought the 200 F1 podium winner wanted to keep a little souvenir of his future teammate. But is Hamilton regretting a move to Ferrari now because of Mercedes’ current flying form?

Hamilton backed his decision and said, “No, not at all.” The 39-year-old will leave his spot for a new recruit to step into Mercedes. Being the 7-time World Champion’s replacement is not a small task but Toto Wolff already knows who will be the best fit. The Austrian wants to promote F2 racer Kimi Antonelli in Hamilton’s place, as he recently confirmed in an interview.
