The Mexican GP tends to offer a lot of speed and thrill. With the weather conditions in Mexico City, especially the high altitude, there is a lot less drag on cars which can result in higher straight-line speeds. But for the best of the best, Mexico has caused trouble. Will Max Verstappen avoid suffering the same fate?

Sunday night will be the 20th GP for the 2022 season. Max Verstappen has the World Drivers’ Championship safe in his kitty; Red Bull has the World Constructors’ Championship in theirs. But Max will likely be chasing and hunting down the record set by German legends, Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.
Verstappen won his 13th race of the season in Austin which tied him for the record of most wins in a season with Schumacher and Vettel. He only needs 1 more win to break that record and Mexico would be a good place to try doing that – especially since he won the pole in qualifying on Saturday night. His 1:17.775 time was comfortably the best, with second-best George Russell behind by 0.304 seconds. While Verstappen has an outstanding record in Mexico, having won P1 in 3 of his 5 races there, this is his first pole.

But it looks like that pole might not be a good thing after all. The last time a pole sitter won in Mexico was in 2016 when Lewis Hamilton won the pole as well as P1 on race night. Since then Sebastian Vettel (2017), Daniel Ricciardo (2018), Charles Leclerc (2019), and Valtteri Bottas (2021) have fallen to the curse of the pole sitter.
Verstappen would hardly be perturbed by history – history is meant to be defied. He will be able to break 2 records if he wins on Sunday night, becoming the first to collect 14 GPs in a season as well as breaking the pole curse.
Twitter has fingers crossed as Max Verstappen heads into Sunday night
For differing reasons, fans on Twitter have their fingers crossed. Verstappen fans are hoping the ‘Flying Dutchman’ will break the curse; while Hamilton fans are hoping this could be a chance for Lewis to get his first victory of the season.
Lewis fans are hoping this would mean a victory for the Briton –

Some feel George at P2 might cause a problem for Max –
the real curse is who’s starting right behind him, that tall evil guy with a stupid british accent who’s taking out everyone he sees https://t.co/6Qjxb5ICqx
