Mercedes driver and 6-times world champion Lewis Hamilton is still without a contract beyond this year. Surely, he’s only waiting for the opportune moment to pen a contract extension. However, a few days ago, Eddie Jordan (team owner of the now-defunct Jordan F1 team) has suggested that he should move to Red Bull. But Max Verstappen was left perplexed by Jordan’s words.

Speaking at Thursday’s driver press conference, ahead of the Russian Grand Prix, Verstappen said, “Well, why would he do that?

“He also wants to win the championship, I want to win the championship. He tried of course to be at the right team, and at the moment, he’s at the right team to win the championship.

“But yeah, let’s see what happens.”

For a man who has won 5 (most likely 6 by the time the season ends) championships with Mercedes and plays for, by far, the best team on the grid, staying on with them seems to be a no brainer.

Besides, Red Bull wouldn’t want to upset Verstappen by demoting him to ‘number 2’ status. So don’t really expect any shocking decisions to be made in the coming days or weeks.

The Dutchman said, “It’s never been an amazing weekend for us, in terms of competitiveness. So I don’t expect any miracles.

“Of course, there are a lot of long straights and a lot of 90-degree corners. So you can’t make a massive difference.

“So probably the guys behind me, they will be a lot closer compared to Mugello. We’ll see throughout the weekend how competitive we are going to be. But of course, the aim is going to be to try and be on the podium.”

Verstappen has never been on the podium in Russia, so he’ll be hoping to amend that stat come Sunday. Moreover, the Dutchman would be itching to bounce back after two successive DNF’s.

Bottas overtook him in the Drivers’ Championship standings in the past 2 races. Verstappen would definitely want to go past him by the end of the weekend and try to close the gap, if possible, on Hamilton.
