Do you recall Alpine’s comments before the start of the 2023 season? The team expected to be running near the front runner, as they had potentially made up a lot of groups. Unfortunately, the competitors did too. However, we cannot blame Alpine for being optimistic, can we? Lewis Hamilton and Co. came out with optimistic statements about their performance. The fans, however, did not agree with what the Silver Arrows had to say and crushed their hopes, giving them a reality check. What did Lewis Hamilton and Co. say to receive this backlash?
Mercedes has been making steady progress in terms of pace. While everyone expected the Silver Arrows to come out all guns blazing for the 2023 season, Lewis Hamilton and Co. were somewhere around the 3rd-4th fastest car. However, the new major upgrades have completely changed the look of the car along with the handling characteristics. Hamilton seems to trust the car and lean on it much more than before.
#F1: According to Mercedes’ engineers, three tenths are still missing on Red Bull and one tenth on Aston Martin. Ferrari is a tenth behind.

Toto Wolff recently suggested that Mercedes will be bringing two significant upgrades in the near future, one of which is due for Silverstone. One would expect Mercedes to make up ground and close the gap to Red Bull. However, a Tweet posted by @Fiagirly suggests that Mercedes Engineers believe that the team is only 3 tenths behind Red Bull and one-tenth behind Aston Martin in terms of pace. One engineer even said, “We are only an upgrade away from a victory.”
As Lewis Hamilton and Co. portrayed optimism toward possible race wins in the near future, fans were quick to give the German Team a reality check. The LH army crushed Mercedes’s hopes of reaching the top step of the podiums as fans took to social media. Let’s see what they had to say.
Fans React to Mercedes bold claim against beating Red Bull
Fans took to Twitter as they shredded the optimism of Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes in their endeavor of beating Red Bull. Many fans asked the team to limit their expectations as the Red Bull is a rocket ship. Others suggested that Red Bull is just sandbagging and will turn up the pace when the competitors get closer. Then Redbull just turn up their car and Mercs need to find another 4 tenths. Thats how quick and far ahead they are.

this is too optimistic maybe in qualifying we will be there but redbull are way ahead in race pace especially with that drs maybe if we fix slow corners then we talking

3 tenths to Redbull is a massive hoax. We are on full push and they are coasting. If they push to the absolute limits like us, i believe its more in the margin of 8-9 tenths/lap tbh

Some suggested Mercedes are naïve in thinking that Red Bull would not bring upgrades to future races.
And they think RB will not bring any upgrades at all ?
— Carlos H. (@cgalloni) June 22, 2023
Yeah but it it’s 3 tenths in Canada it’s probably half a second on a track with fast curves. That doesn’t feel like ‘one upgrade away’ territory.

The deficit to Redbull is definitely larger, they haven’t shown their full pace at any race this year.
If you listen to Max' radio you can even hear them giving his target times to go slower, it’s crazy

Some explained how Red Bull asked Max Verstappen to limit the pace and cruise home while Mercedes is pushing with everything they have at their disposal.
