Throughout this season so far, McLaren and Ferrari have fought a close battle for third place in the constructor’s championship. But after the US Grand Prix, Lando Norris of McLaren admitted that the team from Maranello has a pace advantage over them.

Over the past few races, Ferrari were gaining a few tenths in every race. But it was in Austin, where everybody noticed the advantage Ferrari now has over McLaren.

Via Motorsport, McLaren’s Lando Norris said, “They definitely have the edge at the moment. Not quicker in every place but just a car which is more consistent than us and more driveable.”

McLaren vs. Ferrari

After winning in Ferrari’s home race in Monza, McLaren had the wind in their sails, but in the following races, Ferrari introduced new power units and upgrades for both their drivers, which increased their pace.

Nowhere was Ferrari’s pace and advantage over McLaren more clear than in Turn 12 at the Circuit Of The Americas. Both the Ferraris and the McLarens engaged in a thrilling Lap 1 battle in which the red team came out on top; the McLarens simply didn’t have enough.

Ferrari finished ahead of McLaren and closed down the gap to only 3.5 points behind them.

Norris says McLaren will keep pushing

But even though Ferrari has found some pace, McLaren hasn’t conceded just yet. Norris is quite optimistic and determined despite admitting that Ferrari have “the edge” currently.

“But that doesn’t change the way we’ll try and keep pushing to stay ahead. It’s not what we want so late in the season, we’ve got to try and do something more to get back ahead of them,” Norris said.

Team Principal Andreas Seadle is also pushing to focus on their own performances rather than being worried about Ferrari’s gains.

“It’s simply important we extract each weekend the maximum out of the package as it is, execute clean weekends, clean races, have a good strategy and then hopefully that’s enough to battle them until the last lap in Abu Dhabi.”

The final few races of the season will be interesting because of track suitability. Some tracks will favor McLaren while some would favor Ferrari.

Ferrari who finished sixth last season, their worst result in four decades, would look to regain some of their lost pride. Whereas McLaren, who finished third, would also look to cement the fact that their team is indeed in a comeback era.

Seeing how both teams have maximized their upgrades, it’s down to the strategic planning and racing outcomes that will decide who finishes third; McLaren or Ferrari.
