After months of speculations regarding his move to Mercedes, it is now official that George Russell will team up with the seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, next year.
The Silver Arrows academy product, Russell, was promoted to Formula 1 with the Mercedes-powered Williams team back in 2019. And after three immensely impressive years at the Wantage-based team, the young Brit is all set to replace Valtteri Bottas next year, who will join Alfa Romeo on a multi-year contract.
Meanwhile, ahead of the Italian GP McLaren’s Lando Norris cheekily pulls George Russell’s leg after his move to Mercedes was affirmed. Norris hilariously asks Russell: “How do you feel, do you walk around with more…”. After which, the Williams driver completes the sentence for Norris by replying: “Swag?”

I am definitely going in on level terms: George Russell on his move to Mercedes
George Russell reveals Mercedes had promised that he will be on equal terms to Lewis Hamilton next year. The young Brit will become the third teammate of Hamilton at Mercedes after Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas.
George Russell will replace Bottas, who was also assured of equal terms with the Knight when he joined the Silver Arrows back in 2017, but ended up as a wingman and assisting his teammate with four world championship titles.
Meanwhile, ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, the 23-year-old reveals he will be on equal terms with his teammate next year.
“[I’m] definitely going in on level terms and that was made very clear to me,” said George Russell.
“I think Mercedes have always been respectful in that regard, giving both the drivers the best opportunity, and obviously, naturally, I believe in myself, and I have high aspirations, but equally, I know how tough it’s going to be,” added Russell.
