With just 4 races completed, Ferrari and Red Bull lead the way as expected. Meanwhile, McLaren came into the season with high hopes. They expected their team to be competing for wins and podiums. The testing in Barcelona showed the potential of the car as well. However, things didn’t go according to plan in the first two races.

Nonetheless, the British team bounced back after a torrid start as Formula 1 moved to Australia for the third race and they secured 18 points. And Lando Norris’ podium in Imola topped off an impressive month for McLaren. The young Brit achieved his 6th podium on his way to a 3rd place finish in Italy.

He believes the team has the third-best car on the grid and revealed the drivers are getting to know the MCL36 better as the season progresses.

Lando Norris feels McLaren is showing improvement

Lando Norris’ week in Imola was nothing short of incredible. A P3 in qualifying and a podium at the end of the week highlighted the car’s improvement. Although Daniel Ricciardo retired during the race, his pace in qualifying and sprint would have encouraged the Woking-based team, without a doubt.

In Bahrain, Ricciardo and Norris finished P14 and P15, respectively. So, the development in terms of pace and the results have boosted the confidence of the team.

“Now we are seeing more that Bahrain was a little bit more of an outlier. It was still a reality at the time. A lot of what we saw is still on the car, but we’ve just kind of understood it a bit more.

“We’ve worked on the weaknesses and we’ve made some improvements. There are a lot of positives from it but I think we are comfortably third, I would say,” stated Norris.

However, the young Briton also admits that Ferrari and Red Bull are in a league of their own. Despite starting third on the grid in the sprint race, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz passed him with relative ease. Nevertheless, they will take heart from the fact that they were quicker than Mercedes and will hope to secure the P3 spot in the championship.
