McLaren has embarked on a new journey to achieve glory in F1. The precious wind tunnel, which gives detailed insights into the aerodynamics of the car, is an integral part of that journey. After 12 years of using Toyota Gazoo Racing’s (TGR) wind tunnel in Cologne, they have finally made an in-house facility, worth $100 million in Woking to reach greater heights. But this move came drew some hard questioning from a Red Bull veteran, that Lando Norris and Co. have now squashed.

The veteran being spoken about is David Coulthard. To give some perspective to McLaren, he gave Red Bull’s example for perspective. The Milton-Keynes outfit has been using a wind tunnel facility that dates back to the ’60s. Yet, they are the best team on the grid. Basically, his point was that it’s the information that the team can draw and not the freshness of the machine. But McLaren’s Team Principal Andrea Stella does not want to hear any of this.

“We are not worried about problems of correlation between the gallery and the machine because obviously we have done a work of validating the structure,” Stella told the media. “The gallery was designed with some criteria to improve the correlation with the track. I’m even encouraged by what I’ve seen so far.

Lando Norris Credits Andrea Stella for McLaren’s Recent Success

When Zak Brown was the Team Principal of the Woking outfit, the team saw highs but then declined in performance. But given the small amount of time that Stella has worked, the results are massive. Now, as the team gets new personnel on board and brings significant technological upgrades to their existing machinery, it all looks very promising. And Norris feels it’s all because of Stella’s management.

Norris said, as quoted by Mirror, “The level of work and companionship we did at [the McLaren Technology Centre] on how they tried to develop the car, and their ambition to come up with new ideas – and a lot of that started, I guess since Andrea came in – there’s been a big upward trend in vibe and atmosphere development.”
