Four years since his dig at Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris is getting the taste of his own medicine now. The two of them, along with George Russell, recently made the UK fans proud with their podium finishes at the British GP. Norris got the third place at the Silverstone race, thus establishing himself at the #2 spot on the World Championship standings. In fact, the Belgian-British driver has won seven podium finishes and a Grand Prix win till now in the 2024 season. All of this points to the fact that he has one of the best cars on the grid right now, and thus his fight is now against Max Verstappen.
In 2020, when the Championship fight was between Hamilton and Verstappen, Lando Norris made a comment to undermine the Mercedes racer. It happened after the Portuguese GP that year where Lewis attained his 92nd career F1 race win. With that victory, the Stevenage native beat Michael Schumacher’s previous record for the highest number of Grand Prix wins by a single driver. When an interviewer approached Norris to comment on his fellow Briton’s achievement, he seemed quite bitter about it.
Speaking of Hamilton’s Portuguese GP 2020 win, Lando Norris had said, “I’m just happy for him, nothing more. It doesn’t mean anything to me, really. He’s in a car that should win every race, basically. He has to beat one or two other drivers, that’s it.” However, now, the table has turned as the Championship fight is between Lando and Max. With his McLaren MCL38 failing to beat Lewis Hamilton at the British GP, fans now demand Norris live up to his words.

The followers dug up his quotes from the 2020 Portuguese GP post-race interview after Lando’s disastrous loss to Hamilton in Silverstone. They claimed that the papaya army racer needs to perform better now that he has the second-best car on the grid. However, Lando’s post-Portuguese GP 2020 comment was not the only instance of him taking a dig at Lewis Hamilton. In recent times, he protested against the Briton for not commenting on his Austrian GP clash with Verstappen.

At the Austrian GP that took place two weeks ago, Lando Norris chased after Max Verstappen towards the end of the race. Trying to defend against the Belgian-British racer, the Dutchman made a move that caused both of them to have contact. The FIA, finding Verstappen guilty of causing a collision, slapped him with a penalty. But Lewis Hamilton stayed silent about the whole incident, not taking the side of any of the two racers who were involved.

Hamilton’s silence came as a surprise since he has been in Lando Norris’ shoes during his rivalry with Verstappen in the previous seasons. Thus, dragging Hamilton, Norris said, “I’m sure Lewis would [have] agreed with it 2,3 years ago…100%.” However, the 7-time World Champion still did not comment on the Norris vs Verstappen fiasco. When he was asked to give some advice for Lando as a previous rival of Verstappen’s, all he said was – “They have been racing each other for many years, so there’s nothing.”

Hence, despite Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton sharing a podium last week in Silverstone, the McLaren racer has not shied away from taking a dig or two at the Mercedes racer. But Norris’ current fight is not with Hamilton. Right now, Max Verstappen is the only racer that stands between Lando taking the F1 World Championship crown. As 84 points separate them, the McLaren prodigy needs some Grand Prix victories to make up for this difference.
