After a season full of drama and excitement, no F1 fan, driver, or team member can argue that it wasn’t one of the most thrilling seasons in the sport’s history. Understandably, grievances and complaints are there, because rules which end up favoring one are a cause of agony for the other. And for McLaren driver Lando Norris, one rule has been full of agony.

The rule in this conversation is the one concerning pit stops in a red flag situation.

Though Norris had expressed his thoughts on this rule earlier with brutal honesty, now, after the dust has settled on the season, he explained his stance more calmly and eloquently.

Norris said, I don’t think the current regulation is right. Fans like it because it gives riders victories or podiums, which, quite frankly, they don’t deserve. These results do not come because you drive well or badly, but only because you have had luck or bad luck.”

He added that he hopes something will be done, no matter who gains or loses because of the change.

As for the change he would make or suggest, the Briton said, “I believe that, if we are on slick tires, there must still be the obligatory pit stop, and with this, we must use two different types of tires.”

“You can change the tires with the red flag, but then you still have to stop in the pits during the race.”

What had Lando Norris said earlier about this rule?

“Too many discussions, we need to change it. They should give me access to the rulebook, the official PDF. I press edit, and I just erase it. Select it, right-click, delete” – this is what Norris suggested about this rule after the race in Saudi Arabia.

The McLaren driver was pretty upset in the post-race interviews about the rule that cost him a good finish.

“It sucks, because the team did a good job, I thought the car was pretty decent, but this crap rule ruins everything.”

At the moment, it’s not likely that Lando Norris’ appeals against this rule will cause a change by the FIA; largely because they are dealing with a bigger issue altogether right now.

Regardless, let’s see if Norris’ protests bring about any change. What is your opinion on this rule? Do you think Norris has a point?
