Ever since the start of the new season, Fernando Alonso has proved his worth in gold for Aston Martin. After nailing P3 finishes twice in as many races, the Spaniard looked to repeat it in Australia. However, the race restart after Kevin Magnussen’s crash-induced red flags came as a nightmare. A spin at the starting line saw him slip down to the back of the grid, sending all hopes of standing on the podium down the drain. However, the man from Oviedo did not care at all, as he knew what was about to go down.
In an attempt to overtake his fellow Spaniard, Carlos Sainz got reckless and hit him from behind, sending him into an aggressive spin. The resultant pile-up caused Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon to crash as well. The entire chaos saw the red flags come out again, and the FIA ordered a reinstatement of the pre-restart positions. While the decision came after a while, Alonso knew it was going to happen all along.
In The Red Flags Podcast, they discussed, “He gets hit, gets absolutely spun around and his whole race is f*cking ruined. What does he do? They ask him if he’s okay. He goes, ‘I’m fine check rule 36, sub-section B. In Silverstone, we go back to 1 lap, I got my place back’. ‘Is the car fine?’ ‘Yes the car’s fine. Check the rule’. And even Jenson Button goes, ‘this guy is a genius’.”

Interestingly, the talk about Alonso taking up the FIA boss’s role is not new. The 2x champion expressed his willingness to take up the role, but Lewis Hamilton did not take too well to it.

Following a series of underwhelming performances, Alonso retired at the end of the 2018 season. Ahead of his final race, he vowed to come back and did not rule out coming back as a driver. However, he also talked about becoming the FIA president in the future, a prospect that made his old nemesis nervous.
In a press conference with Lewis, Fernando said, “I like Formula 1. I will always love Formula 1. So, if I will be here as a driver, as a father, as FIA boss or whatever, I will think.”
