Lando Norris is the talk of the F1 town after putting pen to paper on a multi-year extension with McLaren. To us, it came as no surprise as his performances merited a prolonged stay with the team. However, it wasn’t so easy for him when he awkwardly brought up the topic at a dinner conversation.

The 21-year-old youngster from Somerset narrated the story of how his new contract came to be. Shockingly, it wasn’t the leadership group that opened the talks, but he himself took the initiative.

Ahead of the Monaco GP, he revealed, “It was actually something I brought up when I went to dinner with Zak a while ago.

“He was talking a little bit about the future and I was just like: ‘You know, about these future years, is it something we want to start talking about now? Is it something you want to talk about later in the season?

He added, “Just because I don’t know when or how to bring it up, just like a guy talking to a girl for the first time, so a bit awkward.”

Talk between Zak Brown and Andreas Seidl already started regarding Lando Norris’ McLaren future

Thankfully for Lando, he didn’t blow it. His contract did materialize in the end, as we found out today. Not only that, but he found out that Brown and Team Principal, Andreas Seidl were already discussing a possible extension amongst themselves.

“I think at that time they already started talking about it as a team, between Zak and Andreas and so on. And it was something that I preferably wanted to get out the way as soon as possible. We then started talking about it and all flowed from that,” said Norris.

Seidl and Brown expressed their delight with Norris earlier today after handing him the new multi-year deal; they want to continue their upward trajectory with him. While the terms of the contract were undisclosed, we are assuming it takes him well beyond the 2022 F1 season.
