It was a touch-and-go situation for Pierre Gasly during the last fifteen minutes of the Free Practice 2 session of the Singapore Grand Prix. The Frenchman had his car shoot flames out from the air vents as he pulled into the pits. The AlphaTauri driver was quick to escape the car while the fire was quickly extinguished.

Pierre Gasly wasn’t doing as well in the Free Practice 2 session as he would have thought. He could only manage to be 14th fastest in the FP2 after a good run in the Free Practice 1 session. However, that is not what that session will be remembered for.

With 15 minutes still left on the clock, Pierre Gasly was going into the pits. Just when he was being rolled into the garage, the air vent caught fire. It was all very sudden when the French driver leaped out of his cockpit. The AlphaTauri crew and one of the Aston Martin mechanics were quick to react and douse the flames with a fire extinguisher.

The whole incident left fans shocked.

We usually see that when F1 cars catch fire, it is either after a crash or while running on the track. Gasly’s car catching fire in the pit lane had one fan wondering.

One of the fans and folks at WTF1 lauded the Aston Martin mechanic who helped put out the fire.

One particular fan decided to have some wordplay to explain the situation.

How the two Free Practice sessions panned out

It came as a surprise to everyone when Lewis Hamilton claimed the fastest lap in the first Free Practice session. Drivers’ standings leader Max Verstappen was in a close second, while Charles Leclerc finished third.

Things moved toward normalcy when the second session of the Free Practice took place. On a track that doesn’t have many straights, Max Verstappen could only finish 4th, while Ferrari posted a 1-2 with Carlos Sainz in the lead. A surprise inclusion in the 3rd place was Mercedes’ George Russell. His teammate Lewis Hamilton finished behind Max for the 5th position. The biggest highlight of the event, however, was Gasly’s fire incident.

Max Verstappen currently sits in the 1st position in drivers’ standings with a gulf of 116 points between him and Leclerc. If he is to take his second title in two years this weekend, he will have to outscore Leclerc by 22 points, Perez by 13, and Russell by six to claim the championship.
