The Japanese GP has given the world of F1 plenty to discuss and Mercedes is finding itself on the wrong end of this discussion. There is a problem in the Mercedes garage which keeps highlighting itself from time to time. It did so in Japan as well, as we all know when George Russell was asked to move aside for Lewis Hamilton during the last stint of the race. The problem arose when Russell lost an extra position. However, according to F1 veteran Peter Windsor, this problem will persist for one reason.

The reason being George Russell‘s edge over Hamilton over one lap. Windsor has been an admirer of Hamilton for many years. Although, the Brit has often been slower compared to Russell over one lap and this is hampering the team’s strategy and might possibly hamper their relationship in the long run. Windsor revealed this opinion while speaking on the Cameron F1’s latest YouTube video.

Windsor said, “I think George is a very clear-cut, basic, unbelievably competitive racing driver. What we’re seeing from George is absolutely nothing new, he was like that Williams. Nobody should be surprised that George is asserting himself. I’m a Lewis fan! I’ve loved watching Lewis drive and I totally respect everything he’s ever done but I think right now, you probably have to say, over one lap at most circuits, Goerge is probably a fraction quicker than Lewis. And that’s the problem!”

However, there is a clear hierarchy at Mercedes as Hamilton is and has been the main man for a decade now. There is obvious favoritism as well and even an inside-man revealed that.

10 years, six drivers champions, and eight consecutive constructor’s championships. There is an obvious hierarchy at Mercedes and no one can upset that. Especially after Hamilton’s contribution to the team, no one can question it as well. However, we are starting to see cracks, like a couple of incidents in Japan, for which he was hounded by the fans. In fact, Mercedes simulator driver & Sky Sports analyst Anthony Davidson exposed this reality of the Brackley outfit.

Having worked with the team since 2012, Davidson has seen it all. After seeing it all, he made an honest admission of the hierarchy in the team. “There’s definitely a hierarchy in that team. And rightly so. You know, Lewis has earned that status in that team as a seven-time world champion, and George can’t argue against that. George is still the understudy, and he’s doing a very good job on those occasions where he’s got the speed over Lewis to really take the fight to him. But he’s doing it in such a George Russell polite way, which is quite humorous to watch because I know inside the car, he’ll be fuming and steaming,” said Davidson.

This was evident in Japan as well but will this scenario continue till the 2025 season? Or will we see a shift in the power dynamics before Hamilton’s contract runs out?
