It is common for F1 drivers to be compared to their teammates, as they are racing in the same machinery. Though Oscar Piastri has joined McLaren with the car at its slowest, he has raced decently. After 7 races in 2023, he has earned 5 points, while his teammate, Lando Norris has secured 12. But Piastri believes he still has one thing to change before he can beat Norris.

Most F1 rookie drivers usually find it a bit challenging to keep up with the pace of F1 cars, let alone match their more experienced teammates. And it is the same for Oscar Piastri, who is taking time to find his pace in McLaren’s MCL60. Besides this, he has also opened up about his performance compared to his teammate, Lando Norris.

Oscar Piastri said, as quoted by motorsport-total, “I think at the moment it’s just about getting a little bit faster on the race weekends. When it comes to qualifying, especially in recent races, the performance has been quite comparable to Lando [Norris].”

Speaking specifically about his performance at Monaco, he said, “But in Monaco, for example, I was missing six or seven tenths throughout the practice. When you go into qualifying with a deficit like that, it’s not good for your confidence. And even if you try to find the time, others find a few little things in some corners, and in the end you have to find quite a lot of time, which is sometimes not so easy.”

The F2 winner pointed out that the major differences lie in the performance analysis and the size of the team. While F1 has all possible onboard angles to analyze the laps, F2 has none. In addition to this, Piastri said that the number of engineers that he has in his F1 garage was the size of their entire team in F2.

Piastri in his interview with Motorsport-total.com said, “Yes, there are definitely a lot of differences in that regard. In Formula 2, we have the data after the session, but we don’t have any onboard cameras to look at.” He also added, “The number of engineers I have now is probably as big as the number of people I had in my Formula 2 team overall.”
