Mercedes star driver Lewis Hamilton once opened up on the man who has been instrumental to his Silver Arrows career. Hamilton’s race engineer, Peter Bonnington, is the man whose shoulder has been the most supportive in Hamilton’s ten-year Mercedes career. Known as Bono, the Briton is the man behind famous radio calls “Get in there Lewis” and “It’s hammer time.”

Talking about his relationship with Bono, Hamilton revealed in a video, “I mean with Bono it has been the longest engineer partnership that I’ve experienced and it’s been amazing. But it’s been tough. He’s had some real difficult times as well in his journey and we’ve been there, through it, together.”
“These ups and downs bring us closer. Sometimes we get frustrated with each other. It’s like a marriage, I guess, but we work it out, and we keep pushing. I think what’s at the core of it is that there’s love and there’s real friendship and loyalty, which is a real part why we’ve been so successful,” stated the seven-time world champion.

Peter Bonnington and Lewis Hamilton have worked together since 2013 and it has been ten years since the duo has been supportive of each other. Bono, who was earlier the race engineer for another seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, came at exactly the right time to undertake the former McLaren driver’s race responsibility on the team.
In general, the drivers need to have a good relationship with their race engineers to have good performance week in and week out. For example, Max Verstappen has got an immensely deep relationship with his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. Similarly, Bono and Lewis have shared a deep-rooted bond throughout their careers at Mercedes.
