Formula 1 is as much as management, as it is about the drivers. Two of the interesting people that share or have shared associations with the sport, and Ferrari in particular, are Jean Todt and Nicolas Todt.

‘Todt Senior’ is, of course, the current president of the FIA, but held a respectable leadership position at Ferrari nearly a couple of decades ago. Nicolas, on the other hand, is the Scuderia’s star driver, Charles Leclerc’s manager, and confidante.

But does this necessarily mean that their family has control over one of F1’s biggest teams? Nicolas responds to the question and offers a fitting reply of his own.

Nicolas Todt believes the very notion is ‘ridiculous’

Speaking in an interview, Todt stated, “It’s ridiculous, it makes me smile. I have known Mattia Binotto since 1995, defending Charles’ interests which coincide with those of Ferrari. We’re on the same boat.”

Nearly 10 years prior to Leclerc’s move from Sauber to Ferrari, another driver in Felipe Massa had followed the same path. And who was Massa’s manager, influencing the move at the time? Nicolas Todt.

He continued and said, “More nonsense. They forget that I was following Massa, who was not exactly the favorite in the fight with Alonso.”

“We had to digest difficult times. And then I don’t work only with Ferrari, I have many drivers and no team has ever complained,” concluded Todt on the topic. (all quotes are translated through Google Translate)

In an earlier interview, Nicolas had shed light on how Leclerc was close to quitting his racing career. But in every step of the way, he helped the Monegasque driver get back on his feet. Today, Leclerc is racing in Formula 1 for one of its most historic teams.

Nicolas Todt has continually downplayed his power, and it is also not exactly deniable that he does hold a level of influence in the F1 paddock. He was also previously a co-owner of the ART Grand Prix team.

Regardless, Todt will certainly be proud of what Leclerc has accomplished today. Every time Leclerc shines on the track, his manager will have a twinkle in his eye.
