The F1 Monaco GP, the Indy 500, and the 24 hours of LeMans make up the “Triple Crown” of motorsports, and individuals who manage to win all these races are forever immortalized in motorsports lore. Unsurprisingly, several racers have tried, but only one man has claimed this title so far, the late Graham Hill.

Recently, Red Bull world champion Max Verstappen took his name out of contention for the Indy 500

Max Verstappen scared to death of Indy 500

The bad news for Verstappen fans is that the Red Bull man might never take part in the Indy 500. And this is coming from the world champion himself. This declaration effectively puts him out of contention from ever claiming the “Triple crown”.

Max is already a Monaco GP winner in 2021; the Indy 500 and 24 hours of LeMans remain but he does not wish to take part in the Indy 500.

The biggest concern is the safety aspect of the Indy 500. ” I have no desire to go for the Triple Crown . At the very least, to go to Indy. I appreciate what they do, but those drivers are crazy. But with all the time I’ve been in Formula 1 I don’t have the need to risk my life in that way or injure myself… my legs, or whatever. It’s not worth going Go for the Triple Crown if you have to do that, let’s say it like that.” said Max, effectively ruling out his participation in Indy 500.

But the Dutchman did not rule out his chances of competing in LeMans, “Perhaps I would go to Le Mans. I like the Endurance and maybe I will compete in one of them soon. But hey, it doesn’t matter too much.”

The winner of the recently held Indy 500 and former F1 racing driver Marcus Ericsson disagrees with Max. The Swede replied to Max’s claim of Indy 500 being too dangerous with his experience. He said, “When you’re so focused on F1 you’re not following so closely what’s happening here (IndyCar series) and how the safety is moving forward and I think the last few years have been incredible”

We doubt this will be enough to convince Max to compete in the Indy 500. But it’s good to hear from a driver who has taken part in both F1 and the IndyCar series that the latter is focusing on the safety aspect.
