What could have given a decent lead to Checo Perez ahead of Abu Dhabi GP, in the battle of P2 for Driver’s standing, has ended up in a tie with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. We all know whom to thank for giving P2 battle some more twist. Max Verstappen turns down the help that could have been offered to his teammate, amidst the battle for second place in the driver’s standing. After dropping back to P17, the Dutchman showed some quick moves to reach sixth place. The team soon asked Checo Perez to let Verstappen pass. However, the Mexican was made sure that once Verstappen was done fighting for P5 with Fernando Alonso, the position will be given back to him.
But this didn’t happen as Max Verstappen refused to give the position back and said over the team’s radio that he has his reasons. This might have hurt the 32-year-old who has always supported his teammate in difficult situations. And even after the promise which Hugh Bird made that the team will ‘debrief everything afterward’, Sergio Perez showed his frustration and said, “It shows who he really is.”
Post the race, Perez openly disregarded the ungrateful gesture of the Dutchman. He said, “I am very surprised. I don’t understand his attitude after all I have done for him. If he has won two championships, it is thanks to me.”
The Red Bull team principal, who watched the whole scene through the paddock, gave his opinion
Christian Horner gave his views on the Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez incident
Christian Horner, who has always believed that Red Bull is working as a team, seems to have discussed the matter ‘ internally’
When he was asked about the incident, he said, “We discuss these things internally.”
For Horner, it is important that Checo should finish at the second spot and his only competition is Ferrari’s, Charles Leclerc.” The drivers were very, very clear and for us, Checo is now tied on points with Charles, Ferrari didn’t switch their cars around and we go into Abu Dhabi as a team to do the very best for Checo to get that second place,” said Horner.
Moreover, the Red Bull boss made sure that the drivers are not having any disputes after the incident at the Interlagos circuit, “The drivers have discussed it, they have shaken hands, and we are focused on that next race.”
