After an impressive showing in junior championships, Carlos Sainz gained Red Bull’s recognition. He drove for their junior team Toro Rosso for 3 years before making a switch to Renault. However, his best years came during his stint with McLaren which earned him a place at Ferrari, where he is currently stationed. The Spaniard may now drive expensive Ferraris in his personal time but there was a time when he had the humblest drive among the lot.

In a resurfaced video from the 2016 Hungarian GP press conference, we saw many drivers reveal the cars they drove. The then Force India driver Sergio Perez revealed he owned a Ferrari. Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson told he owned a Porsche Panamera. 2008 championship runner-up Felipe Massa told he owned Ferrari’s LaFerrari and F40, while Nico Rosberg had a Mercedes 280 SL. Young Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz, however, revealed he owned a modest Volkswagen Golf.

The Volkswagen Golf had quite a cult following back in the day as it remains the German brand’s highest-produced car at 35 million units. However, as Carlos’ fate has changed over the years, so has his drive. Being a Ferrari driver, he owns several of their supercars. Moreover, he is a man of around $47 million net worth, according to Marca. We expect him to indulge a bit after earning the bucks.

In an interview earlier this year, Carlos revealed he still has his Volkswagen Golf GTI. The car remains close to his heart as it was his 18th birthday gift from his parents. That, however, does not mean he has kept the temptation of owning high HP engine cars at bay. According to Hotcars, the Smooth Operator currently has 4 supercars in his garage, two of which are McLarens (720S and 600 LT Spider) and the other two are Ferraris (812 Competizione and Roma).

Carlos, after his first season with the Prancing Horse, retired the Golf GT and replaced it with a custom 812 Competizione. He, however, believes no car feels good after driving his F1 car on the track. Carlos told, “I still have my Golf. Look, at the weekend I’m driving a Formula One car and it’s the fastest car ever. Everything else feels really, really bad. I don’t mind and I’m happy with whatever car you give me.”
