After struggling all year with multiple issues, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes finally mounted a fight against Max Verstappen. However, it was not enough as Max Verstappen won the Dutch GP, his 10th win of the season. Mercedes had a perfect game-plan on Sunday as Lewis Hamilton started the race in P4 and George Russell in P6. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell opted for a 1-stop strategy and it almost worked out for the Silver Arrows.
Unfortunately, a late Virtual Safety Car allowed Max Verstappen to pit and change his tires. Ultimately, the Red Bull driver regained the lead but the performance on Sunday has left Lewis Hamilton hopeful. He wants to get back to fighting Max Verstappen and challenge him for race wins.
Lewis said, “I’m dying to get back in that race and have the opportunity to fight Max, but the day hasn’t come [yet]. There’s so many great things to take [from the Dutch GP]. If this can be the same in the future races, we’re going to be continuing to breathe down their necks and get that win.”
Lewis Hamilton could have won his first race of the season but a bizarre decision from AlphaTauri denied Mercedes a potential 1-2. However, they will be hoping for the same pace in Monza if not better.
Toto Wolff questions AlphaTauri after Lewis Hamilton could not get the win
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff called out AlphaTauri and their decision to send out Yuki Tsunoda back on track on Sunday. Their decision potentially cost Mercedes their first win and 1-2 of the season. Mercedes were on a 1-stop strategy and the VSC played nicely to Max’s advantage and gave him a free pit stop.
The Mercedes boss said, “If we were to fight for a championship, that would be something I would closely look at”.

He added, “Now, I think what needs to be investigated for the safety of drivers and everybody out there.”
“The driver stopped, unbuckled, did a full lap, came in, the problem wasn’t solved, they put the seatbelts back on and he drove out and stopped the car again.”
The Mercedes boss feels the incident robbed Lewis Hamilton of his first win of the season. Moreover, he followed the race planner which said they had a good shot at winning.
