If there’s one thing Formula 1 is known for, it’s doing things differently, innovating. And in most cases, it’s usually the technological advancements it brings forth that take the world by storm. But this weekend at the Hungarian GP, F1 isn’t flaunting anything technical. Although it is trying out something new, something no other motorsport has ever tried before. What is it? In collaboration with the Sky Group, F1 is doing its first children’s broadcast, with kids doing the commentary and interviews for Sky UK and Sky Deutschland. And a young presenter got to fulfill a dream!

Getting to meet your idol is special. But getting to do it on the job, standing right next to them to interview them, adds another layer of special to it. And that’s exactly what happened with Ruby Volk, a junior presenter for Sky Deutschland. On Media Day, the Thursday before the Hungarian GP, Ruby got the opportunity to interview her idol, Lewis Hamilton. Before he came down for the interview, she was visibly anxious, the excited kind. And when she was asked how she was feeling, getting the chance to talk to her idol, she replied, “I’m about to cry.”

When Hamilton finally made his way to meet her, the first thing he did was hug her. And then he said, “I love your jacket. And your pigtails.” Ruby wore white pants, a white shirt, and a gold shimmery jacket. If there’s anyone who rocks the paddock with their outfit anytime they walk in, it’s Lewis Hamilton. And Ruby gave him a run for his money. So coming from Lewis, her idol and a fashion icon in the F1 community, it would’ve made her day. Evidently, she couldn’t keep the smile off her face.

The children’s broadcast on Sky UK and Sky Deutschland has primarily been introduced to enhance the viewing experience for younger fans and get the younger generation interested in the sport. But apart from a fun experience for viewers, it’s also given children like Ruby Volk, who might want to become presenters in the future, an avenue to explore the sport. F1’s first-ever children’s broadcast, exclusively at the Hungarian GP

F1 is a technical sport that might lead to younger fans losing interest in it because of the amount of jargon involved. To make the viewing experience easier to understand and fun to watch, according to f1.com, “The feed will feature 3D augmented graphics, child-friendly team radio transmissions, technical explainers and a bespoke package of colorful graphics and animations.” F1 has also created avatars for each driver that will be used in the feed throughout the weekend.
