Even though they’ve made quite an improvement this year, Ferrari does not have the car to win on merit in 2021. According to their star driver Charles Leclerc, the biggest issue with the 2021 car is its inconsistent performances on race weekends.

In an attempt to make the sport more competitive. F1 is bringing a new set of regulations from next season. The 2022 season promises to bunch up the field and make it easier for drivers to compete with the cars in front.

Would swap 2021 for 2022, if the car is more competitive: Charles Leclerc

In his interview on Beyond the Grid, the Monegasque stated that it is frustrating to not have a competitive car. He also stated he is pushing the team to focus more on the 2022 season.

Yes, of course. If it guaranteed me, if you had the contract in front of me telling me that if we sacrifice 2021 for a competitive 2022, I’ll be happy to take it,” he replied when asked if he would swap 2021 for the 2022 season.

“But nobody has this guarantee, unfortunately,” said Leclerc.

Charles stated he is pushing the team to focus more on the 2022 season. “[I’m pushing the team] more to focus on 2022. And I think this is clear for everyone. 2022 will be a huge opportunity for everyone. These new cars are going to stay for many years after that.” said the Ferrari driver.

“This year, OK, we are still fighting with McLaren for the third place in the constructors, but at the end, we know that our goal is to fight for the first position very, very soon, and this will be from 2022 onwards, and not this year.

“So I will be happy to give up about the third place in the constructors in 2021 to be fighting for the first place in 2022,” said Leclerc.

With a major overhaul on the cards for next season, do you think Ferrari will be able to field a car competitive enough to fight for the top spot? Or will they continue to fight in the midfield?
