“No Toto, No Toto this is so not fair, don’t give us hope!” This original remark could conjure up images of a horrific night for all the Mercedes and Hamilton fans, but the hopes Toto Wolff’s Mercedes presented us last weekend may have been thrilling. The Silver Arrows have finally made a significant advancement in the right way. However, the team still didn’t achieve the anticipated speed to compete against the mighty Red Bull and now it seems that the dreams of Lewis Hamilton and the team have been dashed by the fans.
The Mercedes team eventually gained some speed at the Melbourne circuit after a challenging start to the season. During their run at the Albert Park qualifying, George Russell and Hamilton came in second and third, respectively. In addition, it was anticipated that the young British driver would put up a fight against Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. And to the delight of Mercedes, both of the Mercedes drivers managed to pass the Dutchman on the opening lap. However, Verstappen quickly displayed the true pace of the RB19 and reclaimed the lead.
A good step forward for @MercedesAMGF1 in Melbourne 👊
But, can they catch the Bulls? 👀#AusGP #F1 https://t.co/lgFlzWxtjd

However, Russell’s engine caught fire on the seventh lap, forcing him to retire. Later, Hamilton made a valiant effort to catch Red Bull, but at one point, he was ten seconds behind the Dutchman. Nevertheless, the Silver Arrows team was aware of their main competitors, Ferrari and Aston Martin. While Ferrari had their own miseries, Hamilton pulled ahead of Aston Martin by more than one second. He was also successful in holding Fernando Alonso at bay.
Considering the outcomes, Toto Wolff was quizzed by Formula 1.com about his team’s performance and whether they had reduced the gap with their main rival, Red Bull. Wolff replied to it by saying, “I think we made a good step forward this weekend on both single lap and race pace. Is this where our baseline needs to be? I’m not sure. I think we maximised what we have.”
He added, “I think it was good to see we were racing Ferrari and Aston Martin, and we just need to consolidate that. And the more we learn about the car, and bring the upgrade packages, we can challenge the leaders more.”
The fans have not received well the Statements by Wolff and it seems the spectators have dashed the dream of the Brackley-based side.
The fans thwart Lewis Hamilton and the team’s aspirations of catching Red Bull
Red Bull already has a potent powertrain and enjoys a significant speed advantage in straight lines. The Silver Arrows are well behind the Austrian team in that regard. Therefore, catching the Red Bull might prove too challenging for the Brackley-based side. However, F1 fans are well aware of all the news pertaining to the sport and have provided some rational explanations for why Hamilton’s squad is unable to overtake the Milton Keynes outfit. See a few of the reactions given below.
Maybe if Verstappen decides to retire

No, Australia is usually an outlier. RB is 1 second faster in tracks like Bahrein. Probably too much for any team to just bridge it with updates this year.

Well, if they apply an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, they can have a non-competitive but winning car by 2024, because the Red Bulls have enormous power without DRS, and when they apply DRS it transforms that car from another planet. Toto is bound to win. #AMD #Lewisham https://t.co/SetFN0MD5R

on some circuits they will be better then others, doesn't mean they can actually 'catch' Red Bull

One of the spectators made a mockery of Mercedes and claimed that the team could only triumph if Verstappen ultimately decided to hang up his racing boots and call it quits.
the right question is can Mercedes catch Aston Martin? #F1 https://t.co/1pKPrkfajf

Fans have seen the true pace of Red Bull and they believe it’s not possible to catch Verstappen’s side this year.
Can they heck. If it wasn't for red flags Max would've won that race by 30+ seconds quite comfortably.

The Bulls can't be caught, more especially on the straight with the DRS…
