Last year’s final lap broke the hearts of Lewis Hamilton supporters as Max Verstappen won his first World Championship under some controversial circumstances. However, if you thought the drama was over with Abu Dhabi’s last lap, you are in for a surprise!
Red Bull allegedly exceeded the $145M Budget Cap for 2021 and now they might face some serious consequences. This includes Max Verstappen potentially losing his first World Title.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has been pretty vocal about Red Bull possibly exceeding the budget cap limits. If found guilty, Toto wants the FIA to enforce their rules, which even include docking constructors as well as driver points.
This might change the entire scenario of how last season’s Abu Dhabi GP panned out. With Lewis Hamilton visibly not over the heartbreak, whether FIA will dock Verstappen’s points from last year’s tally remains to be seen.
Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, Toto said, “The cost cap is probably the most important evolution of regulations to keep a level playing field.”
“It is of huge importance that these regulations are policed. The FIA, and particularly Mohammed (bin Sulayem), have shown a pretty robust stance on enforcing all kinds of regulations.”
“So if we are talking now about something big, he will show the same integrity and leadership that he has before.”
The FIA has also been under constant pressure to strip Max Verstappen’s title and crown Lewis Hamilton as the champion. While nothing concrete has emerged just yet, Hamilton and his fans will have found renewed hope. The Briton was arguably robbed of his 8th World Title by Michael Masi’s unusual safety car call.
Red Bull boss comes out to defend Max Verstappen as he threatens legal action
Christian Horner was furious and threatened legal action against Mercedes boss Toto Wolff for “hugely defamatory, fictitious claims.” The Red Bull boss believes their rivals are using the budget cap debate to distract Max Verstappen from winning his 2nd title during the weekend.
Horner said, “I have no idea what the outcome of our rivals’ submission is so I would be intrigued to know where their source of information for these fictitious claims has come from.“

He further added, “They are hugely defamatory, and one can only assume that it is not a coincidence that this comes at a point where Max has his first strike at a world championship.“
Max Verstappen currently enjoys a comfortable 116 points lead ahead of second-placed Charles Leclerc. Furthermore, he can win his second successive title this weekend itself.

The FIA has been under serious pressure from the other teams regarding the budget cap issue. Naturally, they are taking their time with the decision. However, Lewis Hamilton and co. will be waiting for the FIA’s statement.
If RBR is found guilty, another intriguing thing will be to see if Max’s points will be docked. If they are, Lewis Hamilton will be the undisputed king of F1. But will it be fair to penalize Max Verstappen for Red Bull’s error?
