Any sport would lose its charm if it lost the competitive element from it. F1 is no exception. Red Bull and Mercedes’ dominance in the last decade became monotonous, and the FIA had to devise a plan to tackle this issue. They introduced the budget cap in order to limit the playing field’s spending and bridge the competition. Mid-table teams have welcomed this decision, especially the Lawrence Stroll-led Aston Martin.

Lawrence Stroll is not an overly popular figure in F1. The Canadian Billionaire bought Force India (later Racing Point and now Aston Martin), which changed the fortunes of the team. He has invested a lot into Aston Martin Racing and has already brought in two multiple world champions (Fernando Alonso & Sebastian Vettel) to partner with his son.
Moreover, the fashion mogul was excited by the news of the FIA announcing budget-cap rules. Stroll believes that the move allows the rest of the playing field to draw level amongst the big boys of F1. Also, he also took a sly dig at Red Bull by calling them a “fizzy drink” company.
“A lot of these teams have won historically by outspending the competition. Without the budget cap I would be dreaming,” stated the Aston Martin boss in an old interview with CityAM.
He further mentioned, “I would not mislead you. It’d be very difficult for me as an individual to compete with big OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] or big marketing budgets of fizzy drink companies. But this budget cap levels the playing field and also gives a road to profitability”
Despite Stroll’s optimism, Aston Martin has failed to capitalize on the opportunity to compete against their mid-table rivals.
When Lawrence Stroll received a taste of his own medicine from an F1 legend
Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll was heavily criticized by former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve. The former champion called out Stroll for not running the team properly. Adding to that, Lawrence Stroll received a similar jibe from Villeneuve like the one he made on Red Bull.
The 1997 world champion said, “Running a team takes more than just money, Lawrence Stroll with Aston Martin is now finding out. It is not a clothing label or a watch brand, because it is much more complicated. Especially if you’re running a team for your son, finding solutions become all the more complicated.” [Translated from Google]

Villeneuve questioned Stroll’s ambition and future plans for the Silverstone team. He further takes a jibe at his compatriot and sarcastically comments on whether the working conditions in the factory are to “die for”.
Jacques continued, “The question is, what is big boss Lawrence Stroll doing? If he treats his drivers the way he does business, those are not nice conversations.”
