These were the biggest stories to come out of the Mexican GP: Max Verstappen broke his own record for the number of wins in a season—he won his 16th race of the season. Home hero Sergio Perez crashed out in the first lap of the race. Daniel Ricciardo out-qualified Perez and then gave AlphaTauri its best result of the season. While the Red Bull-affiliated boys stole most of the limelight in Mexico, rumor had it that another driver on the grid would soon become a Red Bull driver. Who was it? Fernando Alonso.

At the start of the season, Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso were Red Bull and Max Verstappen’s closest rivals. As the year has progressed, the Silverstone outfit has gotten progressively worse. And although Alonso has never once expressed he’d like to switch teams, that’s the way the rumor mill works. But now, the two-time champion has put it all to rest with a fiery warning.

After the Mexican GP, Spanish journalist Albert Fabrega posted a cryptic tweet hinting that a big story is set to shake up the F1 paddock. Most people attributed this to Alonso either switching to Red Bull or hanging up his racing boots once and for all. Considering Alonso hasn’t in the slightest pointed to a possible retirement—even though he has expressed his discontent with Aston Martin—he obviously wasn’t pleased with the rumors.

It’s no secret that Alonso is in the final phase of his F1 career. The next time he decides to leave the sport, it’s going to be for good. While that justifies where the retirement rumors came from, how did the Red Bull ones come up? When the season started, the Spaniard had complete faith in the Aston Martin project. He actually believed the team could be title contenders soon. But seeing how the season’s played out, he’s understandably started losing faith. What good will hanging around at a mediocre team do, especially considering he still wants to win? That’s where the Red Bull rumors started. But that’s precisely what they were: rumors.

In the build-up to the Brazilian GP, the Spaniard sent warning shots to the media for making up ridiculous rumors. He said, “All of you are journalists and professionals that have been in F1 for many years and you gain your respect and this is how it should be. All the rumors are coming from people that are not in this room. I will make sure that there are consequences.

We’ll have to wait and see what the consequences are. In the meantime, you’ll be surprised (or maybe not) to know that Alonso’s Red Bull switch rumors weren’t the first absurd speculations about an Aston Martin driver.

Remember Alonso’s teammate’s tennis career switch?

Over the summer break, F1’s silly season wasn’t too silly when it came to F1 rumors. Instead, the rumor mill latched on to the fact that someone speculated Lance Stroll would be shifting careers to tennis. While his 2023 season has been below average, like Alonso, never once did he even entertain the prospect of a tennis switch.

Stroll does play tennis regularly but he’s never once thought about making it his profession. At the Dutch GP after the break, he addressed the comments. He said, “I really don’t know who was it that invented it. Surely, they were having a few beers on the bus, thinking about my tennis matches. Better ask them. It was certainly a strange thing. I don’t know how it came to their mind. I never really thought about taking tennis back.”
