For most F1 fans, for most years, the lives of the drivers were mainly one-dimensional – on track and behind the car. However, thanks to social media and Drive to Survive, there’s a massive interest in their personal lives as well. This newfound interest has given all fans an opportunity to peek at all the good energy Lewis Hamilton puts out in the world.

The Mercedes world champion is a driving force for diversity in motorsport and otherwise. Much more than just a driver, Hamilton often uses his massive platform to put his point forward and spread awareness. This outspoken nature perhaps keeps the Briton in the headlines. However, he does not mind.

“I’ll always be that thorn that hopefully ignites some interesting conversations…,” he concluded while speaking about pushing diversity into motorsport.

The Mercedes man has been subjected to racism on multiple occasions. Coming from a humble background, Hamilton has experienced discrimination firsthand. This is exactly why the Briton does not take his platform lightly and uses it to champion basic human rights among other agendas.

The Briton put his money where his mouth by investing in his desire for diversity and change. Hamilton funded a study called the Hamilton Commission, which pointed out the reason behind the lack of diversity. After the findings pointed out the problem areas, he started a charity to bridge the gap that gap.

The noble work might not bear fruit just yet, but every step counts. Although sadly, the path to most noble pursuits is lonely. However, Hamilton found a companion in a rival.

Fierce rivals on the track, both Hamilton and Vettel share similar ideals. The two outspoken men often, or used to, lock horns on the track. However, Hamilton feels the upstanding nature of both world champions has helped them connect.

“With Seb for example, we’ve had some great races in the past and I’m so proud of him, of how he’s gone through his journey and how he’s opened up and how he’s been outspoken … and continues to be.”

“But to be able to come out from that and be such good friends—and I think it will continue to grow and (we’ll) be even better friends in future—I’m really grateful for,” said Hamilton.

It will be a shame to see Vettel leave the sport as a driver, as will Hamilton when his time comes. However, we can be sure of one thing, the two will not stop working towards their agenda to make the world a better place.
