Lewis Hamilton is a strong personality when it comes to advocating his ideas on social issues. Such was the time in May 2020 when the death of George Floyd shocked the world, including Hamilton. This sad time amidst the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Hamilton to a great extent. He united the entire F1 community to stand against racism and discrimination.
Though the reason for this stand was indeed the deep impact George Floyd’s demise had on Hamilton. As per the New York Times, Lewis stated how he felt upon hearing the news. He said, “I really wasn’t expecting that day. I hadn’t cried for a long, long time.”

“Probably the last time I’d cried before then was when my auntie [Diane Hamilton] died of cancer. I was with her for the last two weeks. I remember trying to be really strong for her kids.”
He added further on how it gave him the courage to speak about the things he experience as a child. He said, “Then there was George Floyd. The whole thing was devastating. It brought up these things I experienced when I was a kid that I didn’t get to really share with anybody.”
It was the death of George Floyd that sparked the Black Lives Matter protests.

The impact a person’s demise can have on you is sometimes unfathomable. Though, Lewis ensured that his internal fire should make an impactful change in the world. It brought the #WeRaceAsOne campaign started by F1 to promote inclusivity and equality in all forms of motorsport.
Lewis Hamilton on Climate Change
Hamilton supports numerous social and environmental causes off the racing track. He is a staunch supporter of fighting against Climate Change and urges every individual to make small contributions towards the cause.
The 7-time world champion believes that every individual can make small changes to his/her life and impact the climate and environment positively. Lewis spoke at the WE Day UK in March 2020, advocating awareness of climate change and urging youngsters to take action against it.

He mentioned, “It’s going to take all of us to come together, being united, to make small changes in our lives. We’re so fortunate to have and occupy this planet, so we better start treating it right.”

Many have criticized Hamilton and termed him a hypocrite for speaking on environmental issues, despite being an F1 driver. To this, the Briton always responds by saying that F1 is taking the right steps toward making the sport more sustainable and carbon-neutral.
