Champion of human rights, diversity, and inclusivity, Lewis Hamilton is anything but a silent bystander. The Brit often uses his Formula 1 platform to bring important issues to light. However, from 2023 onwards, all drivers will be restricted by FIA from speaking their minds. This ruling ahead of the 2023 season has already received criticism from various F1 entities. However, now, the UK government is getting involved and pleading with the drivers to boycott races.

Lord Scriven, vice chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Democracy and Human Rights in the Gulf, suggested Hamilton boycott races. Additionally, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is among the eight who signed an open letter to the FIA and F1 bosses. As quoted by Express, the politicians plead with Hamilton and Co. to boycott races in the middle east where basic human rights are not upheld.

“I receive letters from those that are suffering and all I can do is try my hardest to empathize with those who face these challenges and have these tragic stories to tell,” he said. “No country is perfect, but we can all do more. I am just trying to do as much as I can in the time I have. I can’t do everything and I can’t do it alone. I need allies.”

Hamilton alone cannot bring positive change to a country. However, his constant voicing of these issues brings them to the people’s attention. It will be interesting to see how that changes, if it does, in 2023.
