Lewis Hamilton may be facing obstacles on the contract negotiation front with Mercedes, but that doesn’t mean the seven-time world champion has given up on dreaming to win a record eighth title.

With the 2021 F1 season only a couple of months away, the Briton is keen to continue his dominance over the F1 grid. Having already broken a host of Michael Schumacher’s records in the past year, Lewis has set his sights on breaking F1’s most incredible record.

He said (translated via Google), “The eighth title is a huge thing, I already get difficulty pronouncing the number, but still that will be the theme that will be talked about in 2021.

“I’m also focusing entirely on that title, with a great group of people around me.”

Hamilton’s statements clearly indicate his desire to continue with the Silver Arrows. After all, there is no other vacant seat in F1 and certainly no other drive that would give him the chance of winning his eighth crown. So, it looks as though Lewis is confident that the contract negotiations will be resolved soon.

However, team boss Toto Wolff’s recent comments clearly indicate that the two parties haven’t found middle ground yet.

Nevertheless, it is widely a given that Hamilton signing on the dotted line is only a question of ‘when’ and not ‘if.’

In 2020, Red Bull were the only team touted to be capable of competing with the Silver Arrows. But despite the Milton Keynes-outfit’s best efforts, they fell a long, long way short of expectations. Mercedes ended the campaign in first place, 254 points ahead of Red Bull.

But this year, Hamilton expects a tougher challenge. He said, “I expect a tough year, I can assure you of that. Red Bull has shown that they are very strong in 2020.

“We have always demanded the maximum from our engines, but they were simply faster. Therefore, we still have to work very hard.”

Whether Hamilton is luring his opponents into a false sense of optimism or he’s being brutally honest, it’s hard to tell. But fans would definitely hope Hamilton’s statements are true, because it’s about time we saw more than one team battle for the crown.
