However, the race organizers made a blunder when the Thai-British driver went for the pit stop. As seen in a tweet, fans were seen walking past the active pit lane during the race. This could be a very dangerous move given F1 cars are very fast and the fans were very close to them.

Talking about the blunder, a former Red Bull mechanic shared on Twitter, “So it seems before the race ended they were already letting people into the pit-lane, forgetting that Albon hadn’t stopped yet. I hate to see this, you really don’t want to be messing around in an active pit lane.”

Why did Alex Albon pit at the very last lap?

Alex Albon took a late pit stop to avoid the penalty for not stopping. Initially, the driver thought to complete the race without pitting. However, with the race penalties in mind, the Williams driver made the choice. Even though the driver didn’t intend to go for the fastest lap, however, the tire changes were mandatory as per the F1 rules and regulations.

Albon started the race on hard tires in order to last longer. A grid penalty enabled the former Red Bull driver to start at the back of the pack. Interestingly, had Alexander not pitted he could’ve ended the race in either P7 or P8 given the pace and position he had.

However, the former Toro Rosso driver finished the race in P10 to pick up a point. This was the driver’s first point in 2022 for him as well as for his team Williams Racing. Currently, Albon sits in P16 in driver’s standings after three races with a single point.

As Nicholas Latifi failed to claim a point, that left Williams stand in P9 in Constructor’s Championship ahead of Aston Martin. As F1 goes to Italy next, it’ll be interesting to see if the Thai-British driver and his team can make further amends.
